Over the years I've developed a tendency to dream up some hare-brained idea (typically travelling) and focusing on this until it plays out or fade into oblivion to be replaced by the next "big thing". My alter-ego for this is called "MudCakedFace", capturing the essence of letting go of modern comforts and being OK with mud splatter, well, everywhere. While these endeavours have typically involved bicyles, other tools have made their appearances...a Landrover, an enduro bike, a back pack.

K, I'll stop when the awesome stops...

Even more great roads and views on offer. Going back over Mafika Lisiu (3090m), then Moteng (2820m) and Mahlasela (3220m) en route to Afriski.

Of course, they claim to have the highest restaurant in Africa but after a day's riding, they had me at "restaurant".

Photo creds to Jan Potgieter.

Not all trips have to be long and epic. I'm currently enjoying a quick getaway to Lesotho on the motorbike.

While this ride is tar only, the roads are amazing, with dramatic ups and downs, and incredible vistas of summer-greens and high-altitude blues.

With Lesotho so close to Johannesburg, I'm not quite sure why I'm not here EVERY weekend...

Two weeks - gone?!

We come to the end of our holiday in Greece, having spent a week each on Corfu island and in Athens.

So nice to share this with someone, and so nice to sleep in hotel rooms, a HUGE improvement over the tent!

Of course, the imminent end forces a question: Back to Italy for more bike touring, or home for, well, home.

While the first half of the trip was really about the sheer physical challenge of all those awesome passes, the last bit would be about great romantic locations...Amalfi, Tuscany, Camogli. Best shared with a love one, no?

I'll be heading home to save this for a future trip, with Elizabeth to accompany me, maybe in a classic Alfa spider 😜

I'll post a couple of videos post-edit in the next week or so, but for now, enjoy the sights of Greece!

I've been quiet...

I'm currently in Brindisi, on the South-Eastern tip of Italy, ready to take the ferry to Corfu, Greece tomorrow to meet up with Elizabeth for a 2-week holiday. Boy, am I spoilt!

The first 6 weeks, and more or less the first half of the trip draws to a close. I'll admit, my enthusiasm to come back and slog through Amalfi and Tuscany is waning.

I guess rightly so...I've gotten so used to HUGE climbs and dramatic landscapes with an overbearing sense of accomplishment at the end of each day, the couple of flat or undulating days were...boring and tedious. Pretty, but without a kick :/

In total, I've done 31 named climbs for a total of 46.5 hours of climbing and 42,000m of vertical ascent. More than I do in 6 months of training. A couple of dragons have been slain, and itches put to rest.

I'll see what happens after Greece, but for now, I'm putting on sandals and a wide-rim hat!

It's out there, for the taking.

Here's a video of a typical "day-in-the-life of".
